I joined The Law Shop in early 2022, bringing with me nearly two decades of legal experience since beginning my practice in 2005. My approach to practicing law is straightforward: make sure your story is heard, give you an honest assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of your case, and help you move forward with a practical plan that actually works in real life—not just in theory.

Clients appreciate my ability to be both direct and approachable. I believe people deserve straight answers, realistic expectations, and an attorney who genuinely cares about what happens to them after they walk out of the office.

I was born and raised in central Iowa and graduated in the top 10% of my class from Grandview College in Des Moines before spending several years in the corporate world. Eventually deciding I preferred helping people over attending meetings that could have been emails, I packed up and moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia to attend Regent University School of Law. While there, I completed an internship with the Civil Rights Division, Criminal Section, of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.—an experience I still consider one of the highlights of my legal career.

Over the years, I have developed a diverse legal practice that includes family and juvenile law, adoptions, criminal defense, real estate, estate planning, and municipal representation. I am also a certified mediator and previously served as an instructor at the University of the West Indies in Belize, helping teach the first class of certified mediators for the Belize Supreme Court’s mandated mediation program.

I also spent time living in Belize, where I helped a local ministry establish a safe haven for victims of sex trafficking. In 2013, I returned to Iowa and settled in Warren County, where I continue to enjoy serving clients in both rural and urban communities.

These days, much of my practice focuses on helping people navigate major life transitions—especially divorce and custody matters. Having gone through a divorce myself, I understand firsthand that family law cases are rarely just about legal issues. They are emotional. Financial. Stressful. Sometimes messy. Occasionally absurd. And almost always deeply personal.

That perspective has changed the way I practice law in all the best ways. I know what it feels like to stare at spreadsheets late at night, wonder what comes next, negotiate over things no one ever imagines they’ll negotiate over, and try to keep life moving while everything feels uncertain. Because of that, I bring not only legal experience to the table, but real-world perspective, practical guidance, and the ability to keep clients grounded when life feels anything but grounded.

Outside the office, I am the proud father of four children who are now mostly grown and beginning lives of their own, and the grandpa of a beautiful little girl. I enjoy staying active, spending time with family and friends, and embracing the next chapter of life with the understanding that even the best plans sometimes take unexpected turns. Fortunately, helping people navigate those moments—with clarity, perspective, and a sense of humor—turns out to be pretty useful both in and out of the courtroom.
