Tara Elcock

Shop Attorney & Mediator

Tara lives and works through a motto, a quote by Albert Einstein, “only a life lived for others is a life worth living.”  Life is too short to live in fear, in pain, and in uncertainty.  Having to work through a legal matter will likely bring some fear, pain and uncertainty. A guarantee that Tara brings to the table is a certainty that no matter what, you will be guided through a troubling process with an understanding of your rights, a calming voice, and a plan to ensure that a difficult time is made easier with her help.  You will be in good and protective hands when in Tara’s care.

Tara began her law practice in 2003.  She owned and operated her own law firm from 2005 until joining TLS in mid-2022, helping people in many subject areas. Tara’s practice includes family and juvenile law, probate, mediation, guardian ad litem work, and child and family reporter services. She also handles personal injury matters, appellate work (including two oral arguments before the Iowa Court of Appeals) and basic estate planning.  Tara is certified in mediation as well as Collaborative Practice for family law matters.

Tara was raised in Marshalltown, Iowa with two sisters. She attended Iowa State University where she was on the track team and graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Tara subsequently entered the joint degree program at Drake University, earning her Jurisdoctorate degree in May 2002 and her Masters in Public Administration in December 2002. She also carries a Legislative Practice Certificate from Drake University Law School. Though Tara had initially thought she would practice as a corporate attorney, her experiences at the Drake Legal Clinic during law school caused her to fall in love with helping families and individuals on a more personal basis. She has stayed true to this passion ever since.

While at Iowa State, Tara met her husband of 21 years, Marc. Together they have two teenage sons, Noah and Myls.  The family currently resides in Warren County with their three dogs (Lucy, Luca and Loki), two cats (Lily and Charlie) , a bearded dragon (Hulk) and some hermit crabs. The Elcocks enjoy doing things as a family, traveling near and far, and following the boys around doing sports.  Spending time with family is a highlight for Tara.

I am so happy I chose Amy to help me work through my divorce. She made this unknown process to me VERY manageable and “made it all happen” when I didn’t have a clue as to where to even begin. Amy has a warm and welcoming personality that made me feel really important, not just a paying client but a person who she truly had a big heart to help!! She wanted to hear my story and made sure to give me hugs when she knew I needed them! – Erica
“Skogerson Law provides friendly, fast service! I was more than satisfied with the results of my custody modification and always felt like my case was at the top of the to do list. There is no question that I will use Skogerson Law for any future needs!” - Jessica
When I got married I never imagined that I would be divorced, but I think that's true of most people. 17 years later, I was a nervous wreck walking into Amy's office. She greeted me with a warm hug. After my nerves were settled, and I had told my story, she took my hand and said that it was time for me to stop taking care of someone who needed to start taking care of himself. I felt safe, and I felt ready. My divorce journey was not as difficult as it could have been, but there were some uphill climbs that I had to take, and Amy was right there with me. Always with advice, always with a kind word, and always with a feeling of positivity. I cannot imagine having anyone else represent me or my family. To work with Amy, is to work with more than just a legal representative. I could provide some small similes in order to really hit home with how pivotal she has been (and to utilize that English Master's degree I'm still paying for) and say: Amy is like a light house during a storm, she is the smell of your favorite cookies baking at your grandma's house , and can be thought of as steaming cup of hot chocolate that awaits you after you've been sledding all day. All true. Simply put, Amy helped my four children and I navigate a very difficult time, and begin our new life as a happy family of five We now live without being afraid, and enjoy every single day that is ahead of us. Amy helped us to get there.” – Kelly
“Amy and her team at The Law Shop handled 5 adoptions for us. From beginning to end they impressed us. The team made the adoptions easy, efficient and FUN! We will continue to refer our friends and family to The Law Shop for many, many years.” – Chris & David
